About the bar
The bar was introduced by Norwegian meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes around 1909, derived from the Greek "baros" meaning weight. One bar closely approximates atmospheric pressure at sea level.
In everyday use the bar appears in tire pressure in Europe, scuba diving, industrial processes, and meteorology. As a point of reference: a typical European car tire is inflated to about 2.2 bar.
