About the bit
The bit (binary digit) was coined by John Tukey in 1947 and formalized by Claude Shannon in his 1948 paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication".
In everyday use the bit appears in network bandwidth (Mbps), CPU architecture (32/64-bit), and data compression. As a point of reference: a typical internet connection speed is measured in millions of bits per second.
