About the byte

The byte was coined by Werner Buchholz in 1956 at IBM. Originally variable in size, it was standardized at 8 bits and became the fundamental unit of digital storage.

In everyday use the byte appears in character encoding (ASCII), file sizes, and memory addressing. As a point of reference: a single ASCII character takes up 1 byte of storage.
