About the gibibyte
The gibibyte (GiB) equals 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024 cubed). It was standardized by the IEC in 1998 to eliminate ambiguity in storage advertising.
In everyday use the gibibyte appears in RAM reporting in operating systems, virtual machine disk sizing, and container limits. As a point of reference: a "4 GB" USB drive actually holds about 3.73 GiB of usable space.
