About the hectare
The hectare was introduced in 1795 during the French Revolution as part of the metric system. Its name comes from the Greek "hekaton" (hundred) combined with "are" (100 m2).
In everyday use the hectare appears in agriculture (farm sizes), forestry, urban planning, and land surveying. As a point of reference: a standard soccer pitch is about 0.7 hectares.
