The mebibyte (MiB) was standardized by the IEC in 1998 as exactly 1,048,576 bytes (1024 squared), distinct from the megabyte at 1,000,000 bytes.
In everyday use the mebibyte appears in RAM specifications, disk partition sizes, and firmware images. As a point of reference: when your OS shows a 100 MB file as 95.4 MiB, it is the same data - just different units.
