About the micrometer
The micrometer unit gained importance with the development of microscopy in the 19th century. It was formerly called a "micron" until the SI standardized the name.
In everyday use the micrometer appears in microbiology, semiconductor manufacturing, and material science. As a point of reference: a human red blood cell is about 7 micrometers across.
