About the yard
The yard is believed to have originated as the distance from King Henry I of England's nose to his outstretched thumb. It was standardized in 1959 as exactly 0.9144 meters.
In everyday use the yard appears in American football, fabric measurement, and landscaping in the US and UK. As a point of reference: an American football field is 100 yards long.
