Kids' shoe sizes: US, UK, EU and cm

Children's sizes are the most confusing of all: the US scale counts up to 13.5 for small children (marked C), then starts again at 1 for older children (marked Y), so a 1Y is bigger than a 13C. The UK scale restarts too, one step later: UK 13.5 is followed by UK 1. EU sizes simply continue the adult scale downwards, which makes them the easiest to follow as a child grows. Nike labels 2C for about 6 months, 4C for 12 months and 7C for 36 months; beyond that, age says little and only the foot length counts.

How to measure

Measure the child standing, heel against a wall, from the wall to the tip of the longest toe. Leave about 1 cm of growing room, a thumb’s width at the toe of the fitted shoe, and re-measure every few months: small feet grow fast.

The table is a conversion between labels, not a measurement standard: brands differ by up to a full size. When a garment or shoe matters, use the centimeter column and the brand’s own chart. Centimeters to inches, if needed: cm to inches.

Sources

All three Nike kids’ charts (baby and toddler, little kids, big kids) are merged here; they agree where they overlap (1Y to 3Y). Nike gives foot length in inches; the centimeter column is that figure × 2.54. Nike’s chart labels both 6.5Y and 7Y as UK 6; we keep it as published.

Frequently asked questions

13.5C, then 1Y: the scale restarts. At Nike, 13C fits a foot of about 19.2 cm and 1Y about 20.2 cm.

US 12.5C (UK 12) at Nike, for a foot of about 18.9 cm.

About 1 cm, roughly a thumb’s width, between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Much more and the child can trip.
